Scolton Manor Railway conservation scheme, Spittal
Scolton Manor, a council-owned tourist attraction located near Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire; is a cultural heritage centre attracting large numbers of visitors on a sustained basis. They exhibit a traditional Victorian manor house and an Agricultural and Rural life collection, as well as offering woodland walking routes, a series of children’s attractions and a visitor centre.
David Haward Associates was employed to develop a conservation scheme aimed at restoring a steam locomotive signal box, whereby visitors could go ‘back in time’ to experience a bygone age. Authenticity of design was paramount and so the reflection of a traditional style and materials, as well as being sympathetic to the surrounding natural space; were key factors in the design. This project involved working in conjunction with ecology and arboricultural experts and required significant research of historical practices in order to achieve an accurately designed, faithful restoration.
