Barn Conversion
A former farm outbuilding just outside Solva, was purchased by our clients, with Planning Permission. However, when we investigated the permission, we found the design to be very ordinary and with errors contained in the drawings. Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority have since tightened up on the accuracy of the paperwork necessary to make an application.
In order to achieve our client’s functional requirements and provide a high quality design, we would need to design a scheme that would involve multiple applications.
As can be seen from the photographs, the building is quite picturesque and has extensive views, particularly to the rear over open countryside. Not so obvious, is the front wall which was parting company with the rest of the structure. Consequently, we allowed for over 50% of the wall to be rebuilt, the remaining walls being underpinned.
When we were developing the design, we wanted to create a winter area ‘snug’ around the log burning stove and a summer area utilising the views. The latter we achieved by adding a simple lean-to garden house which incorporated a folding door to open up the garden. In addition the former garage and workshop were rebuild as art studio and conservatory with garage.
